If only. An alternate for Kurt Russell in the 1990s might have been (don't laugh) Brendon Fraser. When he doesn't have a goofy look on his face (which admittedly isn't often), he makes for a credible...

As I recall, Steve Reeves mentioned in an interview (Cult Movies mag?) that he was in talks to play Doc Savage sometime in the 1960's. I think the idea was to adapt THE THOUSAND-HEADED MAN.

I don't recall hearing about Steve Reeves, but that does remind me that Chuck Connors was to play the role in 1970.  There's a mention of it in an article available on Google News from 1969.

cjh5801- I almost had Chuck Connors on my alternatives list. His height gives him great stature, but I felt his frame was a bit too thin for Doc. Neat to hear though he'd actually been considered....

I always thought Bruce Bennett/Herman Brix would have been a good Doc. Maybe John Payne? Perhaps Eric Fleming in the early 60s? I'm happy they never made a Doc film with Brian Bsworth.

I'd switch out John Russell for Reagan, Dolph Lundgren for Kurt Russell, and Dwayne Johnson for Daniel (monkey ears) Craig. I see you mentioned two out those three.
